Word Study Activities


Activity #1- Closed Sort:
·       Sort your words into their categories according to their features.
·       Copy your sort into your word study notebook.

Activity #2- Open Sort:
·       Sort your words any way you want.
·       You can choose to sort them: alphabetically, by patterns, or by meaning.
·       Copy your sort into your word study notebook.

Activity #3- Sentences:
·       Write one sentence for each of your word study words.
·       Circle your word study word in the sentence.

Activity #4- Shades of Meaning:
·       Choose three of your word study words.
·       Find at least three synonyms (words that mean the same thing) for each word.
·       Write your shades of meaning in your notebook.
·       Put a *star* next to your original word study word in your list.

Activity #5- Word Hunt:
·       Sort your word study words again.
·       Then hunt for words that fit your word study features in your just right books.
·       Copy down a list of the words you find.

Activity #6- Practice Quiz:
·       Look over your word study words.
·       Have an adult mix up your words and read them to you one at a time.
·       Write down each word.
·       Review how you did with an adult to see which words you need to keep practicing.

Activity #7- New Words:
·       Glue or tape your old word study words into your notebook.
o   Don’t forget about these words! Use them in your writing and reading!
·       Cut out and initial your new words and put them in your baggie.
